This blog assignment has got us thinking back to the time before there were blogs, instant access to a cornucopia of web images, and the whole world wide at your fingertips. One of the sources that got our ideas flowing was (and continues to be) Pamphlet Architecture; and one of our favorite issues is #12: Building Machines. This gem was found at a favorite Japan Town Bookstore, Forest Books. Full of dense passionate philosophically loaded texts and bombastic one-liner captions, “At the scale of human engagement in the world, reality is inescapably mechanical” and “The machine is man’s answer to his alienation from nature, not its cause”. In a world where information is the new culture, the new commerce, and the new society; we take some solace remembering the machines we inhabit walking around (our bodies) and the machines that we live in (buildings) still play a very important part in design thinking.
